Young Recitalist Competition

Rules and Regulations

Open to instrumentalists up to 18 years of age as of January 1 in the year the competition is held and who

  • Reside in Castro Valley, Dublin, Fremont, Hayward, Livermore, Milpitas, Newark, Pleasanton, San Ramon, or Union City, or are members of the Fremont Youth Symphony Orchestra, and

  • Are able to play from memory a piece of up to ten minutes in length that demonstrates artistic nuance, technical skill and musicality. The piece may be a subset of a longer work., such as one movement of a concerto.

Each solo applicant must be able to perform from memory a work from the standard repertoire. Duets, trios and quartets may also audition, and may perform with the music. Except for groups and for pianists performing solo pieces, the work must either be performed with piano accompaniment or be composed to be played unaccompanied. Applicants must provide their own accompanists.

Completed applications must be postmarked or received no later than stated deadline. Application forms can be downloaded and printed from the Fremont Symphony Youth Program page.

A nonrefundable registration fee of $35 must be included with the application. Application and payment options:

Auditions will be held on the date listed on our Young Recitalist Competition page at First United Methodist Church, 2950 Washington Blvd., Fremont - unless otherwise noted. Practice rooms will be available. Audition times will be assigned no later than the fourth Tuesday in March, no schedule changes will be accepted after April 1.

Judges will select up to ten finalists to perform their audition piece in a widely publicized public recital on the first Sunday in May at First United Methodist Church. Decisions of the judges are final.

Finalists will be notified via phone or email the night of first Saturday in April, and a list of finalists will be emailed to all participants. A letter with a copy of the judges’ comments will be mailed to each applicant shortly after the auditions. Each finalist will receive an honorary certificate recognizing his or her achievement.
